LNG Canada shipped record one million metric tons in April

Exports of liquefied natural gas from the LNG Canada plant were more than one million metric tons in April, Reuters reports, based on data from the monitoring firm LSEG data.
All the LNG went to Asia, with about half going to South Korea. One cargo went to China when on April 24, the tanker Qingcheng discharged its LNG at the Dongjiakou terminal after a roughly three-week voyage.
Overall LNG Canada has shipped a total of 79 cargos, despite the fact it is sill not operating at full capacity. At full operation, the plant can export up to 14 million metric tons per year, equivalent to around 1.16 million tons per month.
China stopped importing LNG from the United States after the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Chinese imports. China is somewhat dependent on LNG from Qatar, which is cut off due to the Iranian and United States blockades of the Strait of Hormuz.
In August 2025, before the war began, the United States imposed sanctions onf the Dongjiakou terminal because it is one of the main ports that bring in oil from Iran.
The United States producers are reselling LNG that might have gone to China on the spot market where a cargo gets a better price. Overall US LNG exports surged in April when after the Strait of Hormuz was closed.
